Kelly's Seven Points Lead Drexel Past Tribe, 15-9
4/8/2007 4:05:28 PM | Women's Lacrosse
Williamsburg, Va. – Drexel senior Kerry Kelly (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored four goals and handed out three assists as she guided the Dragons to a 15-9 victory over William & Mary. It marked the second time this season Kelly has scored four goals and recorded three assists in a game as she accomplished the feat in Drexel's win over La Salle. The win over the Tribe was the first in Colonial Athletic Association play this season for the women's lacrosse team. Drexel now stands at 8-3 (1-2 CAA) on the season while William & Mary dropped to 2-9 (0-2 CAA).
The Dragons wasted little time as Emily Hoesch (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) scored just 20 seconds into the game. The goal may have awaken the home team, in particular, William & Mary's Jaime Sellers. The midfielder answered Hoesch goal just 40 seconds later then added two more over the next five minutes to give the Tribe a 3-1 lead. Sellers had recorded a hat trick less than six minutes into the game as Drexel's defense looked to regroup. The Dragons' defense stiffened while Kelly started her scoring. She tallied on a free position shot with 17:55 remaining in the half and scored again less than a minute later to knot the score. Eleven seconds later, Kaitlin Keegan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) gave Drexel its first lead of the game. The lead lasted just a few minutes until Sellers broke through again for the Tribe to tie the game at 4-4. Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) scored a goal followed by Kelly's third of the game to extend Drexel's lead to 6-4. At 7:13 Sellers used a free position shot to record her fifth goal of the half while less than a minute later Jamie Fitzgerald scored to tie the game at 6-6. Just before halftime, Hoesch and Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) found the net to give Drexel an 8-6 lead at the break.
The second half started with more of the same from Kelly. The senior midfielder scored just 10 seconds into the second period. The Tribe responded with two unanswered goals to close the Dragons' lead to 9-8 with 24:45 remaining. It would be the closest the Tribe would come the rest of the way as the Drexel defense stymied the William & Mary offense, including Sellers. The Tribe would record just one more goal in the game but it came with Drexel holding a 13-8 lead with less than eight minutes remaining. Sellers, who had scored five goals in the game's first 23 minutes was held scoreless the rest of the game. Kelly had scored four goals in the first 30:10 of the game and had begun to receive increased defensive attention from the Tribe. Instead of scoring goals, Kelly began feeding her teammates for scores as she racked up three assists in the second half. Her final assist came on a Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) goal that gave Kelly 23 assists on the season which tied Drexel's single-season record set by Bradley last year.
Drexel's Lauren LaBella (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) made seven saves in goal as she recorded her eighth win of the season. William & Mary's Sara Beckstead stopped 10 shots.
The Dragons return to the field on Tuesday, April 10 for a non-conference game against Wagner at Vidas Field. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
